PBL World History – Chris Obrien

Since 2007, Chris O’Brien has taught social studies in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District on Long Island, NY. He currently serves on the faculty of Half Hollow Hills High School East, where he has taught AP World History since 2013. His long experience with the course has given him a deep understanding of how AP World History: Modern has evolved over the past decade. In addition to his classroom work, Chris also coaches soccer at his school.

Chris earned his B.A. in History and Government & Law from Lafayette College and his M.S. in Secondary Education (Social Studies) from Hofstra University. He achieved National Board Certification in 2014. In 2023, he joined the pilot program to develop the Project-Based Learning curriculum for the AP World History: Modern course. Following the pilot, he served at the AP World History Reading as both a Reader and an Early Table Leader, experiences that strengthened his insight into the skills and expectations central to student success in the course. His work focuses on creating a practical, realistic approach to AP World PBL that supports meaningful learning and a clear pathway for success for all students.

Prior to the APSI, Chris will send a brief survey to all participants; their feedback will help to craft a unique session to meet the needs of the teachers attending.
